Hoarding disorder is a psychological condition characterized by a pattern of excessively saving items, regardless of the actual or perceived value, as well as a persistent difficulty discarding possessions. This pattern of behavior often leads to clutter which renders a space unusable, unsafe, and even completely unlivable.
Hoarding disorder afflicts around 2 to 6 percent of the population, which is upwards of 1 in 20 people. This disorder affects those of all ages and backgrounds, but is more prevalent in older age groups, as symptoms tend to increase with age.
